If Neymar leaves FC Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain he could net a €40 million (£35.8 million) annual salary.
The Ligue 1 club finished second in the French championship last season and is looking to sign a “top five” world level player to topple Monaco.
Brazil attacker Neymar is close to signing, according to multiple reports in France and Spain. But the 25-year-old won’t come cheap.
The transfer fee alone will cost PSG a whopping €222 million (£196.5 million), with Neymar’s potential wage package coming in at €40 million a year.
Neymar currently earns $12 million (€10 million / £9.2 million) a year at Barcelona, according to Forbes.
A 300% pay rise at PSG would make him the best-paid footballer in the world, topping the €35.75 million (£32 million) deal Carlos Tevez enjoys at Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua.
Neymar exit story dominates Spanish media
A Neymar transfer seemed implausible earlier in the week.
But a lot has happened since then. On Thursday, MARCA hinted that PSG may have already reached an agreement with Neymar’s father and agent Neymar Santos Sr.
Then, on Friday, Radio Catalunya indicated that Neymar had a “95%” chance of leaving Barcelona for PSG. It added that Neymar’s contract in Paris would be €40 million, making him “the highest paid player in the world.”
MARCA also reported that “in the dressing room, Neymar’s exit has long been considered a real possibility.”
It’s not just about money
According to the experts, Neymar wants to escape Lionel Messi’s shadow and become the best player in the world.
“I can understand why he’d want to leave Barcelona,” said Julian Laurens, a television journalist who covers French football for BT Sport and ESPN.
“Messi has just renewed his contract so that means Neymar will play second fiddle for another three or four years and that’s not what he wants… he wants to be a superstar.”
